Bettie has spent the majority of her clinical practice in the operating room. She is currently employed at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick in the Operating Room and as the Pollution Prevention Coordinator. Her passion has become the environmental impact of healthcare on patients, staff and the community. She was first drawn to health care waste management and pollution prevention by observing the vast quantities of waste, much of it clean and basically sterile that is sent to the landfill. Healthcare impacts the environment from many directions. The direction that Bettie sees as a priority is the enormous numbers of products we use to deliver healthcare that are toxic to all parties. Management needs to adopt the practice of seeking safer alternatives to the products and practices. Bettie attended the ANA RN NO Harm Train-the-Trainer program in 2003. Her goal is to bring this information to Maine nurses.
